Egypt Stifles Dissent, Rights Group Says

CAIRO — An Egyptian human rights group has accused the government of clamping down illegally on opponents of the Gulf War.
“Selective measures, such as military tribunals and imprisonment, have been directed against those opposed to the (Gulf) war wishing to express their opinion,” said a weekend statement by the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights.
Egypt, a key Arab member of the anti-Iraqi alliance, has sent about 35,000 troops to the multinational force in the Gulf.
Most Egyptians have backed President Hosni Mubarak’s firm anti-Iraqi stand, but opposition leaders predict more people will turn against the war as fighting increases.
