Santa Anita Sets Mark for Jan. 1 Betting

Santa Anita Park set a record for parimutuel handle on a New Year’s Day when $7,900,542 was wagered on the nine-race card Tuesday.
Attendance at the race track and its Southern California satellites was 49,279, highest for a New Year’s Day since 1949, when the count was 49,515. The on-track attendance Tuesday was 39,146, highest since 1986, when 40,844 passed through the turnstiles on New Year’s Day.
