Monterey Park : Panel on Reservoir Urged
The City Council is asking the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to create a committee of community representatives to supervise repair work on cracks in Garvey Reservoir.
MWD General Manager Carl Boronkay said Wednesday the request “looks good to us in concept. We’ll certainly react to it in a positive way.” The committee was suggested by Councilman Sam Kiang.
The water district closed the reservoir last year after cracks in the 36-year-old structure led to the flooding of about a dozen homes.
MWD officials plan to reinforce the reservoir with a layer of concrete, drill more wells around the site to detect any future leakage and install an alarm system to alert officials to any problems. The district is preparing an environmental impact report on the repair plan.
