Teaching Assistants Plan to Step Up Strike

Teaching assistants expect to step up their “rolling strike” today, with up to half of the 10,000 assistants staying away from 383 Los Angeles schools, union officials said.
Local 99 of the Service Employees International Union, which is representing the assistants as they negotiate their first contract with the Los Angeles Unified School District, has also scheduled a rally today at City Hall.
The assistants, 70% of whom are bilingual Latinas, are entering their eighth day of selective strikes that have targeted schools in Latino areas.
Union officials said Tuesday that 1,800 assistants from 125 schools did not report for work Monday. The district put the figure at 200 assistants from 18 schools.
