Countywide : Schaefer Aide to Temporarily Resign
- Share via
An administrative aide dismissed by Supervisor Madge L. Schaefer last week after she discovered that he had agreed to work for her successor will temporarily resign from county employment Dec. 7 when his vacation runs out.
Former aide Doug Johnson could have continued on the county payroll until he began working for new Supervisor Maria VanderKolk on Jan. 7, since county personnel rules require that the county give him a 60-day notice.
But Johnson said county lawyers told him that he must report to a job at the County Government Center in Ventura, which is an 80-minute commute one-way from his home in Los Angeles County.
“Madge fired me, but the county has the right to compel me to work,” Johnson said.
Schaefer, who ordered Johnson out of their Thousand Oaks office Nov. 19, has said she never officially fired Johnson and decided after their confrontation to assign him to her Ventura office, rather than allow him to collect pay without working.
County officials said Johnson did not have to work for Schaefer, but insisted that he report to Chief Administrative Officer Richard Wittenberg.
