Looking at the Relationship Between Women and Hollywood : TV, a Ghetto for Female-Oriented Films
- Share via
Where have all the female-oriented movies gone? Gone to TV, every one. Made-for-television movies tend to feature the “relationships, feelings, communication” themes that Shirley MacLaine and many others (myself included) would like to see.
Unless they are very special, “relationship” movies will continue to be commercial failures. A moviegoer’s unkindest cut of all is the lament, “It seemed like the kind of movie I could have seen on TV.”
Where would yesterday’s female stars such as Carole Lombard, Bette Davis and Doris Day be today? Most likely, starring in TV movies of the week.
