STADIUM PARKING

Padre fans will pay an extra $1 a game to park in San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium next year if a proposal submitted by the team is approved by the San Diego City Council, Nov. 26. The council will rule on the proposal at 2 p.m.

Councilman Bruce Henderson will hold a stadium media conference for Padre fans at 2 p.m. Wednesday in section N-1 in front of the fans mural behind the scoreboard. Henderson said the he will reveal at that time whether the increase from $3 to $4 is necessary.

VOLLEYBALL

USDHS and Francis Parker each received No. 2 seedings in their brackets and will play at home for tonight’s first round of the CIF/Reebok Southern California Championships.

USDHS (21-2) will host Taft (16-1) of the Central Section in the Division II tournament, while another Central team, San Joaquin Memorial of Fresno (21-7), will travel to Parker (21-1) in Division III. Two other San Diego Section teams received berths. La Jolla (20-9) will be at top-seeded La Habra (22-0) in Division II. Christian (24-4) will be at No. 4-Desert of Edwards Air Force Base (19-2) in Division III.

In Division I, second-seeded Torrey Pines (29-2) will host Arroyo Grande (18-0) of the Southern Section, while Poway (22-5) will be at No. 4-(Pacific) Palisades (17-2). All matches will begin at 7:30 p.m. Winners will advance to the semifinals Saturday.

Defending state champion Grossmont College will open the first round of the Southern California Community College playoffs at home at 7 p.m. tonight against College of the Desert. The Griffins (17-4, 12-0 in the Pacific Coast Conference) are seeded second among 16 teams. The Roadrunners are 15-4, 13-3 in the Foothill Conference. The winner will face the winner of tonight’s match between Los Angeles Pierce (17-2) and Chaffey (14-5) on Nov. 27.

Senior Angie Rais was one of three USD players to receive All-West Coast Conference honors. Rais, a middle blocker from Anchorage, Alaska who had 366 kills and a .296 hitting percentage, was named to the seven-player first team. Middle blocker Nikki Wallace, who had 363 kills, was a second-team selection and was named Freshman of the Year. Torril Purvis, an outside hitter from Chula Vista, joined Wallace on the WCC All-Freshman team.

SIGNINGS

Shaun Scurry, a 6-5 forward from El Camino, signed a letter of intent with Central Missouri State, a Division II powerhouse. Scurry averaged 14 points a game for the Wildcats’ 2-A section championship team. Two other players from that team, Glenn Ankton and Dee Boyer, are starting for Saddleback College in Orange County.

University City High senior Ray Hooper, Jr. signed a letter of intent with Cal State Fullerton, where he will either play as a small forward or an shooting guard. Hooper, 6-feet-5 and 205 pounds, averaged 19.8 points a game for the Centurions during the 1989-90 season.

“He could have gone to Georgetown or DePaul if he has a good season,” Ray Hooper, Sr. said. “But we decided to sign early because you can get into a bind. There’s a million guys his size.”

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The University of San Diego will meet an Australian national team in an exhibition game 7:30 tonight at the USD Sports Center. It is the Toreros second and final tuneup before they play San Diego State in the Sports Arena next Tuesday.

USD (16-12 in 1989-90) routed Athletes in Action, 120-92, last week. Wayman Strickland led the way with 24 points and 10 assists.
