Rowland Emett; Designer of Artistic Contraptions

Rowland Emett, 84, British eccentric who designed artistic contraptions that rarely worked. His creations included the flying car and other special effects for the 1968 film “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” But Emett was most revered for his cartoons in the British humor magazine Punch, depicting the decaying Far Twittering and Oyster Creek Railway. His work has been exhibited in the National Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. On Tuesday in London of unknown causes.
