AMD to Lay Off 200, Warns of More Cuts: Advanced Micro Devices, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chip maker that lost $17.8 million in the third quarter, said the layoffs will occur Dec. 30. It added that an unspecified number of additional jobs will be cut in the first quarter. AMD has been hurt by falling prices for semiconductors and slowing growth in the industry. It will have a worldwide work force of about 12,000 after the 200 layoffs.
