Capistrano Valley High School used the strength of its doubles teams and No. 1 singles player Page Bartelt to defeat visiting University, 14-4, in a Southern Section 4-A Division girls’ tennis first-round playoff match Thursday.
The Cougars (16-4) won eight of nine doubles sets, and Bartelt won her singles sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.
Capistrano Valley, seeded fourth in 4-A, advances to the quarterfinals and will meet Miraleste Tuesday.
“We were real close to sweeping the doubles, which is good,” Capistrano Valley Coach Kerry Leander said.
Leading the Cougars’ doubles blitz was the No. 1 team of Angie Arias and Farrah Tierney, who won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-2. The No. 2 team of Jenny Chang and Jenny Canfield won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1.
University (14-6) was led by Jeanette Fylpaa, who won two of her three sets, 0-6, 7-5, 6-2. Her only loss was to Bartelt. Christina Pham also won a singles set for the Trojans.
University Coach Karen Speros could only wonder what might have been had her team drawn a weaker opponent.
