You certainly can’t ignore 300-plus victories over three years. But how about two World Series defeats in three years? Oakland’s conquerors were heavy underdogs to begin with and lost key players (Kirk Gibson for the Dodgers, Billy Hatcher and Eric Davis for the Reds) during the Series.
And when Oakland did win the Series, it was marred by a devastating earthquake, which Tony La Russa worked to his advantage by having Dave Stewart and Mike Moore pitch two games each.
Is Oakland still the best team? Yeah, but they’re even better chokers.
