Benetton Coming to Soviet Union: The Benetton clothes dynasty has set out to conquer a Soviet market of 250 million people, saying that the Soviet Union was like post-war Italy, where the family rose from rags to riches. Luciano Benetton, who began cycling around Venetian villages in 1955 selling sweaters knitted by his sister Giuliana, announced in Moscow that his company is teaming up with a state-controlled Armenian children’s clothing manufacturer. The venture’s first two boutiques will open in Armenia by Christmas. Benetton has 4,500 shops worldwide.
