Midway Airlines Announces Layoffs: The Chicago-based carrier said that because of rising fuel costs, it will lay off 500 employees, or 10% of its work force, and drop flights in selected markets. A spokeswoman said the airline’s California operations won’t be affected. Midway will also lower costs by replacing seven Douglas DC-9s and one Boeing 737-200 with more fuel-efficient Douglas MD-80s, the spokeswoman said. Midway wouldn’t say how much money the cuts would save.
