Bertelesmann Unit, Maxwell to Buy Berliner Verlag: East Germany’s PDS political party, successor to the former ruling communists, said it was giving up outright ownership of Berliner Verlag AG, the largest publishing firm in East Germany, to Gruner und Jahr AG of West Germany and British publisher Robert Maxwell. Gruner und Jahr, a Bertelesmann AG unit that is Europe’s biggest magazine publishing house and the publisher of Parent magazine here, said negotiations were concluded successfully late last week. No further details of the deal, reached just three weeks before German unification on Oct. 3, were available.
