USIU Soccer Team Beats Grand Canyon

U.S. International goalkeeper Shannon Storey saved a penalty kick with two minutes to go in the second half of a men’s soccer game Saturday against Grand Canyon College. The Gulls counterattacked and scored their third goal to win, 3-1, at the Sunbird Classic in Fresno. John Molomo scored the first two goals for USIU and Noel Peckel scored the third.
UCSD’s six-game winning and shutout streak was stopped as visiting Westmont defeated the Tritons, 2-0, in a nonconference game. David Dengerink scored unassisted, and Aerick Brown scored for Westmont (4-2). UCSD is 6-2.
In an NAIA District 3 game, Cal Lutheran defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 1-0, on Willie Ruiz’s goal at 85:15. Cory Johnson of PLNC (1-3) had five saves. Cal Lutheran is 3-0.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Kim White provided a second-half goal, but it was all USIU could muster in a 4-1 nonconference loss to visiting St. Mary’s. Susan Von Querner led St. Mary’s with a hat trick and an assist. Goalkeeper Amy Love made eight saves for USIU (2-2).
VOLLEYBALL
UC San Diego lost to Westmont, 6-15, 15-4, 15-6, 15-13, in the championship of the La Verne Invitational. Earlier, UCSD defeated Grand Canyon College, 16-14, 17-15, 15-10, to earn a berth in the final.
On the day, UCSD was led by Elizabeth Tan (23 kills) and Dana Simone (17 kills). UCSD is 13-3, with two losses to Westmont and the other to San Diego State.
Point Loma Nazarene dropped the championship of the West Coast Challenge to Texas Wesleyan, 14-16, 15-10, 15-11, 15-1, at Cal Baptist. LeAnne Lopez and Roberta Simpson made the all-tournament team. Jamie Wheat had 10 kills for PLNC (8-4). Stephanie McLaughlin led Texas Wesleyan (11-4) with 19 kills.
