IAAF Approval on Javelin Seen

SPLIT, Yugoslavia — There is no question that the world javelin record by Steve Backley of Britain will be approved, a spokesman for the International Amateur Athletic Federation said today.
“The record was made with a fully approved javelin and in absolutely regular conditions,” Franco Fava, head of the IAAF press office, said. “The IAAF Council has no reason not to ratify it at its first session in 1991, when all records for the previous year are considered.”
The IAAF Council meets at San Sebastian, Spain, in January.
Backley’s record of 298 feet, 6 inches, was set at London on July 20. It was the fourth time this season the javelin world record was broken.
