WORLD : Indian and Pakistani Troops Exchange Fire Across Border

NEW DELHI — Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged artillery fire today across their border in the disputed Kashmir region, a renewed clash India charged was initiated by big guns on the Pakistani side of the frontier.
“The Pakistan troops opened fire in the morning and it has been continuing sporadically,” a government spokesman said.
He said Indian troops returned fire, but it was not immediately known if there were any casualties.
A government press statement said that “high explosive and incendiary shells were fired against Indian posts. Exchange of small-arms fire across the line of control is a frequent occurrence, but the Pakistani forces have used heavy artillery today.”
Government officials in Pakistan denied that Pakistani troops had fired on Indian positions.
The allegation by India came a week after Islamabad accused Indian troops of firing artillery and mortar shells across the border into a heavily populated area of Pakistan’s Kashmir region.
