El Cajon police arrested a Spring Valley man Wednesday night after he allegedly held a group of store clerks hostage at knifepoint during a robbery attempt.
Police arrested Migel Angel Marrugo, 32, outside Leo’s Market Wednesday about 9 p.m., police dispatcher Patti Conrad said.
A passer-by alerted police after spotting the robbery going on at the market, which is in the 600 block of El Cajon Boulevard, Conrad said.
After police surrounded the building, Marrugo allegedly held the store employees briefly as hostages, then fled out the store’s back door alone.
Two officers arrested Marrugo outside after a short scuffle, Conrad said. No injuries were reported.
