HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Two Players Suspended in Wake of Fight

Patrick Henry junior Luke Lowrey and senior Greg Altmeyer have been suspended from school for five days because of their roles in a brawl that followed the San Diego Section 3-A semifinal baseball game between Patrick Henry and Monte Vista.

Shirley Peterson, Patrick Henry’s principal, said the school would also continue its investigation into the incident, which occurred immediately after Monte Vista won, 9-7, Saturday.

Lowrey and Altmeyer were singled out for their aggressiveness in the fight, which involved many players from both teams. Lowrey was originally labeled the instigator for throwing a punch at Monte Vista’s Curt Howard, but Patrick Henry Coach Bob Imlay has questioned whether Lowrey was provoked.

Section Commissioner Kendall Webb said there could be other, long-range penalties in addition to the suspensions.

“My final decision will come as soon as Patrick Henry finishes its investigation,” Webb said.

Section Individual Tennis

Seeded players entered the action Wednesday, and all but the No. 8 doubles team advanced to today’s quarterfinals.

The No. 1-seeded singles player, Ignacio Martinez of St. Augustine, eased by Eric Tebbs of San Pasqual, 6-2, 6-2, and the No. 1 doubles team, Tim Kreysing and Jim Brown of La Jolla, got by Mike Kelley and Armando Araujo of Chula Vista, 7-5, 6-0.

The only upset came when Torrey Pines’ Robert Smoot and Nahn Do defeated No. 8 Ramon Guillot and Tom Koenig of Mira Mesa in doubles.

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played today starting at 1 p.m. at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.
