Cyclist Dies in Freak Blast in Military Area

A motorcyclist was killed and his companion was seriously injured Thursday when their motorcycle apparently hit an undetonated bomb that exploded in a restricted military area about 20 miles northeast of Niland in Imperial County.
A spokesman for the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Ariz., said the two unidentified men were near Surveyors Pass in the Chocolate Mountain Bombing Range--used by Navy fighter pilots for practice missions. The spokesman, however, had no information on the type of munition involved.
