PRAGUE, Czechoslovakia — Antonin Kapek, a former Politburo member and Communist Party boss of Prague, was found hanged at his daughter’s cottage and apparently committed suicide, the state news agency said today. He was 68.
Kapek had tried to commit suicide in January, and was hospitalized after being found shot in the head near an isolated country house in Bohemia.
Kapek supported the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia that crushed the “Prague Spring” reforms in 1968. The Warsaw Pact nations that participated in the invasion have now officially declared it a mistake.
On Tuesday, Kapek was found hanged in his daughter’s country cottage in west Bohemia, according to the CTK news agency.
“No other person’s responsibility was found,” the agency said.
