UCSD Wins Volleyball Title

The UC San Diego men won the Pacific Coast Volleyball Conference tournament Saturday, defeating host Santa Clara University, 15-13, 15-2, 15-5.
Bryan Palmer led UCSD with 12 kills. Nate Brown was named PCVC player of the year, and teammates John Lim and Tom McCutchen joined him on the all-conference team. UCSD Coach Digger Graybill was named coach of the year. Brown, Lim and Graybill were also honored last season.
UCSD is 10-16, Santa Clara 11-12.
BASEBALL
USD defeated No. 8 Loyola Marymount for the second time in a row, winning the first game of a West Coast Conference doubleheader, 2-1. The Lions (38-12, 21-7) came back in the second, 13-2. Tom Cheek earned his eighth save by inducing fellow Mt. Carmel graduate Miah Bradbury to bounce back to the box with two outs and the tying run on third base to end the first game. Rick Doane and Jim Alexander drove in both runs for USD (22-28, 15-15).
Grand Canyon rallied from a four-run deficit to defeat host U.S. International, 7-6 in 11 innings. USIU led, 4-0, going into the seventh inning, but Tim Florez’s three-run homer brought Grand Canyon (34-22) within one, 4-3. GSU hit two homers in the ninth, but USIU tied it in the bottom of the inning on Kevin Crabtree RBI single. USIU fell to 13-27-1.
Cal State San Bernardino put UC San Diego’s playoff hopes in jeopardy, sweeping the Tritons, 3-2, 5-4, in a doubleheader at UCSD. It was UCSD’s final NCAA Division III games. Jeff Brennan, who homered in the first game, went three for six with four RBIs on the day for Cal State San Bernardino (22-12). In Game 2, Erik Judson hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to pull UCSD (16-15-1) within one.
Visiting Westmont College had 29 hits in two games and swept a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader from Point Loma Nazarene, 16-7 and 8-5. Tim Viohl hit a three-run home run as Westmont scored four runs in the top of first, then scored nine times in the next two innings of the opening game. PLNC’s West Rekeda hit a two-run homer in the third. PLNC is 15-29-1 and 2-16, Westmont 18-21 and 9-9.
SOFTBALL
USIU sophomore Cindy Oliver pitched a two-hit shutout in the second game to complete a doubleheader sweep of No. 11 Pacific. USIU won, 5-3 and 2-0. Oliver is 12-2 with a 1.50 ERA. Nora Flores (11-15, 1.05 ERA) won the opener. Shannon Riley singled twice and had two RBIs in the first game, and added an RBI single in the second for USIU (25-25). Karen Winkler scored both runs of the second game after she singled twice and stole three bases.
Cal Lutheran defeated visiting UCSD, 4-3 in 11 innings and 4-1, to sweep a doubleheader. In the first game, with the score tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the seventh, UCSD center fielder Dana Chaiken threw Kim White out at home on a double play to send the game into extra innings.
Tracy Kehr went three for eight with two runs scored and a double for UCSD (21-16). Cal Lutheran improved to 29-10-2.
MEN’S CREW
The men’s varsity eights team from USD beat SDSU on a 2,000-meter course at Newport Beach. USD finished first in 5:52. SDSU placed second, finishing in 5:57.20.
SOCCER
Second-half goals by Glenn Strachen and Craig Hyde lifted the San Diego Nomads to a 3-1 win over the Arizona Condors in the Western Soccer League. The Nomads (2-3, 19 points) moved into first place ahead of New Mexico (2-2, 16 points). Strachen’s goal came in the 75th minute and broke a 1-1 tie. Lucas Martin scored the other Nomads goal three minutes into the game.
