COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Ninth-Inning Home Run Trips CS Northridge, 12-11

Kevin Crabtree’s home run in the bottom of the ninth inning broke an 11-11 tie and lifted host U. S. International (12-35-1) to a 12-11 nonconference baseball victory over Cal State Northridge.

CSUN (28-16) led, 11-8, in the ninth, but USIU rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Northridge assistant Coach Rick Vanderhook was thrown out of the game in the ninth for arguing a balk that scored one USIU run.

Northridge’s Craig Clayton hit a double and two home runs and Greg Shockey was three for four with one run scored and two runs batted in to lead the Matadors.

In other baseball games:

Mission 12, Compton 1--John Kukawski had three hits, including a home run, three RBIs and scored twice to lead Mission (23-11-1) in a Southern California Athletic Conference game at Compton.

With the victory, Mission clinched a playoff berth for the first time in the 15-year history of the school and established a school record for most wins in a season.

Mt. San Jacinto 6, Antelope Valley 5--Steve Lasagna hit a three-run home run in the third inning to lead Antelope Valley (9-24, 4-17) but his efforts weren’t enough for the visiting Marauders, who lost in a Foothill Conference game.

Chris Grant added three hits for Antelope Valley.

Bakersfield 6, Valley 4--E. J. Pape was two for three and Kevin Thomas hit a two-run home run for visiting Valley (15-19-2, 9-9) in a Western State Conference game.

Ventura 9, Oxnard 3--Gabe Diaz, David Eggert and Mike Teron had three hits each to lift Ventura in a WSC game at Oxnard.

Bryan Leiser (4-1), a sophomore right-hander, pitched 3 2/3 innings of one-hit ball to earn the victory.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge 10-6, Chapman 0-0--Debbie Dickmann and De Dow each threw shutouts to lead the Matadors to a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. sweep at CSUN.

Dickmann (18-7) allowed three hits in posting her 13th shutout, and Patti Pearson had two hits and four RBIs in the opener, which was shortened to six innings because of the 10-run rule. Jeanne Mixon was two for three with two runs scored in the second game for CSUN (38-17, 13-1). Dow (7-4) struck out three and walked five.
