PREP ROUNDUP : Tustin’s Ellis Pitches Her Third No-Hitter of Season

Shannon Ellis pitched her third no-hitter of the season to lead Tustin High School to an 8-0 victory over Newport Harbor in a Sea View League softball game at Tustin Friday.
Ellis, who is 10-5 and will attend the University of Hawaii next fall, struck out 15 and walked none. Newport Harbor (4-7, 1-3) had a batter reach base only in the fifth inning on a passed-ball third strike.
Chris Gardner hit a grand slam in a six-run third inning for Tustin (10-7, 4-0).
In other Sea View League softball:
University 11, Estancia 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Visiting University (10-9, 2-2) took advantage of 16 walks and Michele Ponce (3-5) pitched a one-hitter and struck out six with one walk.
In South Coast League softball:
El Toro 3, San Clemente 1--Corrie Yauney had two hits and had one RBI, Jaime Smith had two hits and scored to lead host El Toro (16-7, 4-0) over San Clemente (8-14, 0-4).
Irvine 7, Mission Viejo 1 (eight innings)--Jennifer Brundage pitched a one-hitter, striking out 10, and hit a grand slam in the eighth inning for visiting Irvine (19-2, 3-1). Jennifer Ward hit a home run for Mission Viejo in the first inning. In the fifth, Brundage’s single drove in Lisa Goodwin to tie the score, 1-1.
In nonleague softball:
Liberty Christian 23, Redondo Beach Coast Christian 4--Jenny Engstrom went three for four with five RBIs and had a three-run home run in the first inning for Liberty Christian (11-3).
In the Empire league boys’ tennis:
El Dorado 16, Katella 2--Matt Huddleston swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, to lead host El Dorado (13-3, 5-1).
Esperanza 12, Los Alamitos 6--Take Katsube swept, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1, and Mike Burgess swept, 7-5, 6-0, 6-3, to lead host Esperanza (13-3, 7-0).
In Orange League boys’ tennis:
Valencia 13, Western 5--Danny Yu swept, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, to lead visiting Valencia (14-1, 11-0) over Western (13-3, 8-3). Ryan Takenaga sept, 6-0, 7-5, 6-4, for Valencia.
Savanna 14, Anaheim 4--No. 1 singles player Todd Merryman (6-4, 6-2, 6-0) and the No. 1 doubles team of Brian Booy and Mike Switzer (6-3, 6-2, 6-0) each swept for host Savanna (4-13, 4-7).
In Olympic League tennis:
Santa Margarita 17, Whittier Christian 1--The No. 2 doubles team of Kevin Cimini and Jeff Larson swept its sets, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, for Santa Margarita (12-3, 8-0) at La Habra Tennis Center.
In South Coast League tennis:
Mission Viejo 12, Capistrano Valley 6--The No. 2 doubles team of Jeff Holroyd and Greg Hall (7-5, 6-1, 6-1) swept for host Mission Viejo (10-10, 4-2), which won eight of nine doubles sets.
In nonleague boys’ tennis:
Woodbridge 13, Estancia 5--Brett Isaacman and Reza Nilforoushan swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, to lead visiting Woodbridge (12-3).
In nonleague golf:
Palm Desert 385, Valencia 393--Chris Tidland shot one-under-par 69 in a loss for Valencia (14-1) at Mission Hills. Palm Desert is 12-2.
