Bethlehem Steel Plans to Auction Off Ships

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Bethlehem Steel Corp. said it is putting on the auction block two vessels used to ship ore on the Great Lakes.
Bethlehem said it will retain two other vessels, the Stewart J. Cort and the Burns Harbor, to transport iron ore pellets from Minnesota across Lake Michigan to its Burns Harbor, Ind., steel plant.
Of the two vessels up for sale, the self-loading Lewis Wilson Foy, built in 1978, can carry more than 61,000 tons of ore pellets, and the Sparrows Point, which was built in 1952, has a carrying capacity of 22,000 tons. The Sparrows Point was converted to a self-loading vessel in 1980, the company said.
