NATION : Invasion General to Move Up

WASHINGTON — President Bush has nominated Lt. Gen. Carl Stiner, who commanded the U.S. invasion of Panama, for commander in chief of the elite U.S. Special Operations Command, the Pentagon announced today.
Stiner, 53, currently commander of the 18th Airborne Corps at Ft. Bragg, N.C., will replace Army Gen. James Lindsay, who is retiring as the first commander in chief of the U.S. Special Operations Command.
The command, based at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., was activated June 1, 1987, and includes the elite of the military--Army Rangers, Green Berets, Navy Sea-Air-Land SEALs, and the Air Force Special Operations Wing.
