Merrill Lynch & Co.: The nation’s largest brokerage reported a 16% rise to $41.3 million in its first-quarter profit, compared to the like period last year. However, the New York-based company’s revenue fell 5% to $2.66 billion. The firm attributed its profit increase to cost-cutting efforts implemented as part of a previously announced restructuring.
