FILLMORE : Money Sought to Extend Bike Path

More state funding to extend a bicycle path into downtown Fillmore will be sought by the City Council.
Officials hope to lengthen an existing bikeway between the Sespe levee and A Street. The proposed addition will bring the cycling path to Central Avenue.
In 1989, the city provided funds matching a state grant of $45,000 for the planned extension, but now needs an additional $27,374 to acquire 0.41 acres of land between A and Central streets and to cover engineering costs, according to Finance Director Mark Ryan.
However, the city has only $5,000 available for matching funds, said City Manager Roy Payne, and state funding “may be adversely affected. . . .” At a meeting Tuesday, the council also approved the use of City Park July 4 for the Annual Sespe Creek Chili Cook-Off, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.
