WORLD IN BRIEF : COLOMBIA : Police Kill Nine in Gun Battle at House

Police killed nine gunmen and captured a 10th in a battle near Santa Marta, Colombia, at a beachfront home owned by a legislator. Marta Abello Silva, recently elected to the Magdalena state legislature, is the sister of a man who was allegedly a kingpin of the Medellin drug cartel and is imprisoned in the United States while awaiting trial on drug charges. She was not at home while the gang ransacked the house. Police did not rule out a drug motive but they noted that other homes in the area have been robbed by a similar gang.
