WEST BERLIN — A leading East Germany conservative candidate backed by West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl resigned as his party’s chairman today, four days before East German elections, amid claims he had worked for the once-feared East German secret police.
Wolfgang Schnur did not repeat his earlier denial of the accusations in announcing his resignation from the Democratic Awakening party.
Schnur was his party’s leading candidate in the March 18 parliamentary elections, which will determine the new East German prime minister.
Schnur’s dramatic withdrawal as head of the DA party dealt a severe blow to the three-party conservative Alliance for Germany backed by Kohl.
