China Shuts Publisher of ‘Reactionary’ Book

BEIJING — China has closed a publishing company in western Sichuan province and sentenced its editor and director to suspended jail terms for publishing a “reactionary” book.
The China Daily said Monday that Li Jiawei, director of the Sichuan Provincial Social Science Publishing House, was sentenced to three years in jail for publishing a book on underworld kingpin Du Yuesheng.
Editor in Chief Zhang Li was sentenced to one year. Both sentences were suspended, a common practice in China to give the accused a chance to reform.
The newspaper said a court in Chengdu found the book had a severe negative political impact and led to economic losses of $48,000. It did not elaborate.
