Poway got its 19th shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over Fallbrook in the boys’ San Diego Section 3-A soccer semifinals at San Diego High School Tuesday.
The Titans will play top-seeded and defending champion Bonita Vista for the section title Friday at 7 p.m. at Torrey Pines High School.
Poway reached the final for the first time since tying Valhalla, 2-2, in the 1987 championship match.
It was the third time this season Fallbrook fell, 2-0, to second-seeded Poway (20-1-5).
Rian Watts scored in the sixth minute on an assist from Mike Sharp to give Poway a 1-0 halftime lead. Watts then assisted on Kevin Arthur’s goal midway through the second half.
In another 3-A boys semifinal:
Bonita Vista 3, Torrey Pines 0--Torrey Pines came out strong in the first half and battled top-seeded Bonita Vista to a 0-0 halftime tie. But the Barons settled down and Gus Castaneda, Jeff Yakubik and Casey June each scored in the second half.
“They came after us in the first half with everything they had,” said Milt Shadoan, Bonita Vista coach. “We had a good talk at halftime and calmed everybody down.”
3-A GIRLS
Torrey Pines 1, San Dieguito 0 (OT)--Anaika Dayton scored off a corner assist by Kalli Hose in the first minute of overtime for top-seeded Torrey Pines (22-0-4).
Top-seeded Torrey Pines, which is making its third consecutive appearance in the championship match, will play Bonita Vista Friday at Torrey Pines.
Bonita Vista 3, Mt. Carmel 2--Darcy Comer scored two goals, including the match winner midway through the second half, and Debbie Sandweiss added another score as second-seeded Bonita Vista held off Mt. Carmel.
