A man was killed and another injured by a hit-and-run driver as they fought outside a Chula Vista bar early Saturday, police said.
Authorities said a 22-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene but that his identity would not be disclosed until notification of kin. A second man identified only as in his late 20s was listed in critical condition Saturday at the UCSD Medical Center, police said.
Dispatcher Stephanie Wilson said the incident started shortly after 1:45 a.m. when the two men began fighting inside Smitty’s Tavern at 119 Broadway. They were forced to leave the bar and the fight resumed outside, police said.
“We’re not sure what they were fighting about,” Wilson said.
A woman who identified herself as the bartender at Smitty’s Saturday night said the men left just before closing time. But she said she could not offer any more details about their fight.
Authorities late Saturday did not have a description of the runaway vehicle and asked anyone who saw the incident to call Chula Vista police.
