ROUNDUP : San Fernando Pitchers Hold Grant in Check

San Fernando High pitchers John Najar and Hector De La Cruz combined for 13 strikeouts and limited Grant to two hits in a 5-0 victory in the San Fernando tournament Thursday.

Najar (1-0) had 10 strikeouts in five innings and gave up both hits. De La Cruz had three strikeouts in two innings.

In other San Fernando tournament games:

Birmingham 4, Granada Hills 3--Matt Mawry hit a two-out, run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh to drive in Justin Bass with the winning run for host Birmingham (1-0-1) in a second-round game.

Franklin 7, Poly 6--Franklin committed nine errors but scored five runs in the fourth at Poly to erase the Parrots’ 5-1 lead in a second-round game.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Mission 3, East L. A. 1--Jose Garcia, formerly of Marshall High, scattered four hits and had four strikeouts while pitching his second complete game as Mission (6-4) split its first two games in the Mt. San Antonio tournament.

Mission earlier had lost to Mt. San Antonio, 13-8.

Sacrifice flies by Dain Turner and Jess Romero and a run-scoring groundout by Bruce Gomez accounted for Mission’s runs against East L. A.

Moorpark 9, El Camino 4--Darren Aurand and Danny Smith each had two doubles and right-hander Jeff Berman (2-0) pitched a three-hitter for visiting Moorpark in a nonconference game.

Long Beach City 11, Valley 7--Kevin Thomas drove in two runs and Chris Greenamayer went three for four, but host Valley (4-7-1) came up short in a nonconference game.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

Canyons 4, Long Beach CC 0--Rebecca Schuster, in her first college start, went the distance for host Canyons (4-3), allowing just two hits.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 78, Southern California College 64--Cal Lutheran remained in contention for the NAIA District 3 playoffs in running its record to 16-9, best in school history. Chris Cox scored 16 points to lead the Regals.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 74, Cal State Northridge 68 (2 OT)--Jody Hasselfield’s three-point basket in the second overtime period gave Cal Poly San Luis Obispo a 66-63 lead and permanent control of the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at Northridge.

Julie Arlotto led the Lady Matadors (10-17, 7-5) with 17 points and 19 rebounds and Denna Mulverhill scored 10 points and had 19 rebounds. Northridge set a school record with 67 rebounds.
