Whittier College Cafeteria Blaze Forces Students to Dine Alfresco

WHITTIER — About 500 students at Whittier College found themselves eating meals on the grassy campus lawn and in the faculty lounge this week after a blaze late Sunday night destroyed the campus cafeteria.
College officials were expected to hire a catering service to set up a temporary cafeteria on a corner of the campus. In the meantime, college cooks have been using an outdoor barbecue to prepare food for the students.
Sandra Sarr, a spokeswoman for the college, said fire investigators determined that the blaze, which caused about $500,000 damage, was sparked by an electrical short in a kitchen refrigerator.
