I’m sure that the writers and producers of the Jan. 18 episode of “L.A. Law,” which dealt with ritual circumcision, thought they were just having some harmless fun. Those who have attended such ceremonies know that the episode was pure fantasy. But those who never attended such ceremonies do not. The problem with racial, religious, ethnic and sexist jokes is that they rely on the kind of demeaning characterizations portrayed in that episode. No laugh is worth that.
