USD’s Noriega Is Upset by Stanford Freshman

The University of San Diego’s Jose-Luis Noriega, the nation’s second-ranked singles player, was upset by Stanford freshman Jonathon Stark, ranked sixth, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), in a match at Stanford Saturday.
Noriega’s match was one of only three completed due to rain in Palo Alto. Thus the team match was called with No. 1 ranked Stanford ahead 3-0.
San Diego State’s men’s team improved to 3-0 with two victories, 8-1 over Weber State and 9-0 over UC San Diego. In the Weber State match, the Aztecs’ No. 1 player Tole Marinkovic defeated Dermot Sweeney, 7-5, 6-3, and No. 2 Dax Peterson beat Bob Rosene, 6-4, 6-2. Playing No. 1 against UCSD, SDSU’s Hunter Galloway defeated Francois Monnar, 6-1, 6-3.
BASEBALL
San Diego State blew a 6-3 lead and eventually lost to Cal Poly Pamona in 10 innings, 7-6. Scott Dennison went two-for-four with an RBI for SDSU (1-1).
WOMEN’S TENNIS
USIU defeated Rice, 9-0, in a nonleague match at USIU. The Gulls got victories from Giovanna Carotenuta at No. 1 singles and Andrea Ritezc and Sarit Shalev at No. 1 doubles.
San Diego State (2-1) lost to visiting USC, 6-3, in a Big West Conference match. Michelle Apra (No. 2 singles) and Paige Hammond (No. 6) were the Aztecs only singles winners.
SWIMMING
In a triangular swim meet at the University of San Diego, UC San Diego beat USD, 87-26 and USC defeated USD and UCSD. UCSD’s Katherine Caprilez won the 400-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Julie Evans scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds in San Diego State’s 91-51 loss at UNLV.
The Aztecs dropped to (4-18, 3-8) and UNLV improved to (18-1, 11-0).
Paula Mascari scored 16 points and three other USD players had 10 each as the Toreros beat Gonzaga, 62-54.
Candida Echeverria, Lynda Jones and Christi English each scored 10 points for the University of San Diego (13-8, 3-5). Echeverria also had seven assists and five rebounds. Freshman center Chris Enger blocked 10 shots for USD.
SOFTBALL
U.S. International split a double-header with visiting UCLA, the defending NCAA champion. UCLA won the first game, 2-0, and USIU won the second game, 3-2. After managing only one hit in the first game, USIU got two hits from center fielder Amy Geldbach in game two and scored three runs in the second inning.
UCLA (1-1) loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh, but Gelbach caught a fly ball and threw out a runner at the plate.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Point Loma Nazarene lost to Grand Canyon University, 60-52, in a nonconference game at Golden Gymnasium.
Ron Hubbard scored 18 points to lead Point Loma (6-17), which trailed 33-29 at halftime. Eric Taylor led Grand Canyon (17-8) with 12 points.
