BAGHDAD, Iraq — The Iraq government Tuesday denied a Kurdish opposition group’s claim that helicopter gunships killed 60 Kurdish fishermen in an anti-guerrilla sweep in northern Iraq.
A London-based spokesman for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan said the men were on board nine fishing boats sunk on Lake Dukan, 180 miles north of Baghdad, 11 days ago.
The group said the raid was part of an operation to destroy centers of resistance in Kurdish areas but that the fishermen were unconnected with the resistance.
