JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — At least five gold miners died today in an underground accident, a spokesman for the mine said.
The accident occurred at the Libanon gold mine near Westonaria, 30 miles southwest of Johannesburg, when a working platform collapsed in an ore tunnel 2,300 yards below ground, company spokesman Attie Roets said.
At least five black miners working in the area at the time were killed, Roets said.
The mine, owned by Gold Fields of South Africa, has had a good safety record, Roets said. “To my knowledge, we have not reported an accident from Libanon this year,” he said.
