The largest number of entries for the Best Foreign Language Film Award have been received for the 62nd Annual Academy Awards since the category was established in 1956, Oscar officials said.
Thirty-seven countries have submitted entries for the Oscar competition, which is limited to the best film of the year from each country.
The Oscars for the outstanding film achievements of 1989 will be announced in ceremonies to be telecast live on ABC from the Music Center on March 26.
The foreign films are also eligible to compete in other Oscar categories provided they meet the requirements for those areas. Four foreign films have won in other categories. A handful of other foreign movies have won Oscars without having ever been nominated in the foreign language category.
