Editor’s note: In the two weeks following publication of “Fear and Reality in the Los Angeles Melting Pot,” Los Angeles Times Magazine received 20 letters that were strongly--in fact, viciously--anti-immigration. Five of them were selected for publication. However, in the course of fact checking, it was discovered that those letters and 12 other extremely negative letters were falsified: The letter writers did not exist at the addresses and telephone numbers given. None of those letters are published here.
