SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Proposed Airport Locations Opposed

A petition containing 3,039 signatures against two proposed South County airport sites was presented Tuesday to the City Council, which voted to send a “strongly worded” letter of opposition to county supervisors.
Thirty-year South County resident Ilse Byrnes led the drive of volunteers who manned tables at local grocery stores.
“It was very successful,” Byrnes said, adding that she is continuing to collect more signatures as the selection process for a second Orange County airport comes to a close.
The petitions are aimed against proposed sites at Potrero Los Pinos, 25 miles east of the city atop a plateau near El Cariso Village, and Cristianitos Canyon, located in a remote section of Rancho Mission Viejo, about five miles northeast of San Clemente. County supervisors will make the final site selection from a list prepared by an advisory group during a two-year study process.
Byrnes also presented the council with a resolution against the airport from the California Recreational Trails Committee. She is one of the committee members.
