The Society of Newspaper Design has given an award for excellence to the Life section of the Times Orange County Edition and its news editor, Chuck Nigash.
The judges in the society’s annual competition included editors, photographers and art directors from newspapers and magazines across the country.
They cited the section in the life-style/feature category for issues published from May, 1988, through January, 1989. There were more than 7,150 entries in all categories of the competition, with 337 awards being presented to 77 publications.
The society was established in 1979 to encourage professional development in newspaper design and to recognize outstanding achievements in the field.
Nigash, 33, is a UCLA graduate and has worked at The Times since 1985. As news editor of the Life section, which began publication in 1987, he helped pioneer its design.
