From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A convicted murderer tried to swim to freedom from San Quentin Prison only to be collared by a correctional officer just 30 yards from shore. Officials said the inmate managed to slip out of the maximum-security section of the prison and jump into San Francisco Bay before he was spotted by Sgt. G.H. Riley, who grabbed the prisoner and pulled him back to the beach. The inmate was not identified, but officials said he was serving two consecutive life terms for murder convictions.
