Albertson’s Inc.: The supermarket chain reported third-quarter profit of $46.3 million on record sales of $1.84 billion. Compared to the same period in 1988, this represented a 21.3% increase in profit and a 10.5% increase in sales. The Boise, Ida., company said a major contributor to the profit increase was the opening a year ago of a central distribution facility in Portland, Ore. In addition, the firm cited increased sales volume. The company opened 11 stores during the quarter.
