Monica Seles of Yugoslavia beat Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria, 6-1, 7-5 Sunday to win a $500,000 women’s tournament at Essen, West Germany.
Seles, who turned 16 just six days ago, controlled the first set, winning it in 30 minutes. But the second set was much more difficult, with the 22-year-old Maleeva rallying in an effort to save the match.
Maleeva went ahead, 5-4, in the second set as she kept Seles on the run chasing well-placed volleys.
But Seles, a left-hander who lives in Bradenton, Fla., tied it at 5-5 and then won the match in 1 hour 27 minutes.
Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia, at 6-foot-8 the tallest player on the men’s tennis tour, beat Marc Rosset of Switzerland, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), to win a Copenhaegn tournament.
