THE SIDELINES : Pettis Guaranteed $2.66 Million

ARLINGTON, Tex. —  Gary Pettis will receive a guaranteed $2.66 million under the three-year contract he agreed to Friday with the Texas Rangers.

Pettis, a 31-year-old outfielder who began his career with the Angels, will get a $160,000 signing bonus, $650,000 in 1990, $850,000 in 1991 and $1 million in 1992.

He also could earn bonuses of $100,000 if he is most valuable player of the World Series, $50,000 if he is MVP of the playoffs, $50,000 if he wins a Gold Glove and $25,000 if he is selected for the All-Star Game.

Pettis batted .257 in 1989 with one home run, 18 RBIs and 43 stolen bases in 444 at-bats. He made $440,000.
