* Vikki Carr’s LP, “Esos hombres” (“Those Men”) has done so well in Spanish that she is now recording six of those cuts in English, including her hit single “Mala suerte” (“Bad Luck”).

Certainly no bad luck for “the man” behind the success of “Esos hombres.” Besides Vikki’s LP, composer-producer-arranger Bebu Silvetti’s other projects include new soap, “Balada por un amor” (with Daniela Romo and Jorge Rivero) and the musical score for “Champions Forever.” In addition, Silvetti is the prolific music man behind this year’s string of hit albums by Romo, Raphael, Roberto Carlos and Eydie Gorme.

* The much anticipated movie version of the musical stage hit “Evita,” starring Meryl Streep, has been suddenly suspended. This is not the first time the project has been shelved: Liza Minnelli was to have starred in a 1982 version that met with the same fate.

But in a curious twist, 44 years after its completion a long forgotten movie made an unexpected debut at the recent Biarritz Film Festival. Made in 1945, “La Prodiga” stars none other than Eva Duarte (later known as Eva Peron). Originally scheduled to premiere in 1946, the picture was banned by Juan Peron, then president-elect of Argentina, who decided his wife was better suited to politics than show biz. And, as they say, the rest is history.

* Fans of Camilo Sesto will be happy to know that, after four years of self-imposed retirement, Spain’s popular singer-composer will record a comeback album in Los Angeles before year’s end. His first onstage reappearance is scheduled for February at Chile’s Vina del Mar Songfest.

* Miami’s Walk of Stars (similar to Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, but dedicated to Latino celebs) has already honored Gloria Estefan, Olga Guillot, Ernesto Lecuona, Celia Cruz and, last month, Raphael. Next on the list are Julio Iglesias and Libertad Lamarque. This has been quite a year for the legendary Lamarque--a special tribute for the “Queen of Melodramas” was recently held at Spain’s San Sebastian Film Festival.

* Entertainer Maria Conchita Alonso interrupted her Mexico tour and flew to Los Angeles to participate in a fund-raiser dinner to benefit Padres Contra El Cancer (Parents Against Cancer). Jose Luis (“The Puma”) Rodriguez was also scheduled to perform at the event, but at the last minute the Venezuelan singer announced that, because of technical problems in the sound system, he would not sing. Instead, much to the audience’s disappointment, he simply made a brief personal appearance.

* Short Takes: Bolivian film “La Nacion Clandestina” tied with the U.S. entry (“Homer and Eddie”) as Best Movie in the San Sebastian filmfest . . . Esai Morales is back in Los Angeles after 12 weeks in Argentina filming “The Naked Tango.” He is currently appearing in the film “Bloodhounds of Broadway.”. . . Anthony Quinn recently guested at a White House dinner honoring Mexico’s President Carlos Salinas de Gortari.
