HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Daylight revealed destruction and a death toll that had grown to at least 17 across northern Alabama this morning after a tornado tossed cars from highways and reduced buildings to rubble.
Huntsville police said the storm that hit at dusk Wednesday killed 17 people and injured 463, of whom 150 were still hospitalized. Many underwent surgery.
Huntsville Mayor Steve Hettinger said he was “pretty confident” all the victims had been found. But he said, “As light comes up, there are certainly possibilities (of more casualties) in the residential area where it hit. There are fields . . . that have not been completely searched at this point. . . . We will be searching there.” (Photos on P12.)
