LOCAL : Baby Born in Cab Downtown
A Spanish-speaking woman in labor hailed a cab in downtown Los Angeles this morning and gave the driver a one-word command: “Hospital.”
He didn’t make it, but the baby--with little coaxing--did.
After Philip Gleason, a 54-year-old driver for LA Taxi, surmised that he could not outrace nature, he parked his cab on the corner of 1st Street and Broadway and summoned passing police to assist the woman. The baby was delivered two minutes later.
The mother and newborn boy were transported to the L.A. County/USC Medical Center, where they were reported in satisfactory condition.
Gleason said the $6.30 fare was on him.
